The operator
The app at strangr93.vercel.app does not name a person, a company, an email address, or a GitHub account. Settings, the moderator screen, and the API user object do not either. There is no about page.
The only public person who has claimed to be building a chat app called StrangR is the Reddit account u/Sweet_Explanation841. On 13 September 2025 that account posted the same pitch on r/AppIdeas, r/androidapps, and r/iosapps. The posts never say that this account operates the Vercel deployment. The name matches. The feature list does not.
What the pitch said
Every time you open the app, you get matched with a random stranger. Chats are temporary unless you pin up to 3 favorites, which stay saved. Everyone has a unique Diginumb (like a safe ID) so you can reconnect without sharing personal info. The app is end-to-end encrypted, mobile-friendly, and can be installed as a PWA. You only need a first name + password to sign up (no email).
That paragraph is the post body on all three subreddits. The word Diginumb does not appear in the October 2026 bundle. The live composer says "Encrypted in transit," and the send path is JSON.stringify to the Render websocket. Password is optional. The first name is chosen by the server.
What the same account said when people asked about safety
On r/AppIdeas, u/dmazzoni asked how the app would avoid the outcome described in Omegle's shutdown note: perverts, predators, and scammers. The reply from u/Sweet_Explanation841:
The current system runs over an AI Model for checking specific paterns and protecting childs the system will also Check age at first start(i know it wont stop perverts) also we think about adding Moderators in the future but currently its just an idea!
u/Yugen42 pointed out that end-to-end encryption and server-side moderation exclude each other. The reply:
Nope thats not how it works the LLM runs in the cloud and if our built in word and context scanner detects some specific patterns the ai will analyze it in cloud. But Kids must verify themselves via Photo login and parent verification up to 17 years and after that, they dont have to do this! The main rule of the Platform is: Kids can only chat with Kids(up to 1 year of their own age) and Adults can only chat with adults(no limit on age)
u/district44 and u/Rinz answered that description with "That's not e2e" and "so not really e2e encrypted?" u/_invalidusername asked how moderators would read content the client claimed they could not read. u/Yugen42 said the cloud scanner raised privacy concerns of its own.
Later in the same thread, after someone wrote "If you have that built (you don't)," the account answered:
We have built it! Its currently in Beta 0.9.45! As soon as we finish Version 1.0 it will be available at GitHub
The October 2026 client contains no version string 0.9.45, no photo-verification flow, no parent-verification flow, and no age-band matcher. A search for a public GitHub repo tied to this deployment did not find one. The source map URL returns 403.
The same day, on two other subreddits
On r/androidapps the account told u/typongtv "its completely anonymous the only thing the platform gives you is the name," then offered "an Early Version and Premium Features" and an APK, and asked for the phone's Android version. On r/iosapps, u/Torches wrote: "Matching ppl with unknown creepy characters spells disaster for underage, women, any vulnerable person in general." The account replied: "Thanks for all Answers this Idea is closed!"
The iOS thread says the idea is closed. The AppIdeas thread says beta 0.9.45 exists and version 1.0 will be on GitHub. The Android thread is handing out APKs. Those three posts are from the same account on the same day.
Pitch next to the live client
| September 2025 pitch | strangr93.vercel.app on 3 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| End-to-end encrypted. | "Encrypted in transit." socket.send(JSON.stringify(e)) to wss://strangr-90k3.onrender.com/ws. No Web Crypto in the bundle. |
| A cloud LLM and a word scanner read messages to protect children. Moderators are a future idea. | No AI SDK in the client. Reports go to POST /api/reports. A moderator dashboard already exists and reads "reports from database." The client cannot prove anyone reads them, and it cannot prove a model does either. |
| Age checked at first start. Under 18s verify with a photo and a parent. Children match only with children within one year of age. | First screen is gender, or skip. Age is an optional settings field, minimum 13, maximum 100. The homepage badge says "18+ Only." The report form has a category for "Minors or underage behavior." |
| Diginumb ids. First name plus a password. No email. Pin up to 3 favorites. | No Diginumb string. Server-assigned display name, 10-character hex username, optional password, a friends list, and private rooms. |
| "The only thing the platform gives you is the name." | The room event includes name, age, gender, country, and topic. The subtitle says "Anonymous" when the last three are empty. The name is still sent. |
| Version 1.0 will be on GitHub. The iOS post says the idea is closed. | A closed production bundle on a default Vercel subdomain, API on a default Render subdomain. The HTML shell was last modified 3 October 2026. No repository link in the app. |
What other people said about the idea
These are comments on the pitch, not reviews of the Vercel app. Nobody in those threads posted the strangr93 URL.
- u/dmazzoni asked the author to read Omegle's shutdown note and explain the difference.
- u/jonplackett: "This idea has been tried loads of times before. It just attracts weirdos."
- u/throwaway_skye11 called it a tarpit: moderation, exploitation, and identity checks, on top of a crowded category.
- u/N4ch7m4hr, on r/androidapps, warned about scammers, bots, and creeps, and asked how a permanent ban would work if spam started.
- u/KE3REL, on r/iosapps: "What kind of moderation would this app have? I wouldn't want another Omegle."
- u/ShufflinMuffin wrote "You'll have to adapt to your users and strangR will become grindR." The live client later shipped a 930-point gate before images and voice notes. That comment was about the pitch. It is not evidence the commenter had seen this build.
What is not established
- That u/Sweet_Explanation841 operates strangr93.vercel.app. The live site does not say so. The shipped feature list drops Diginumb, the GitHub promise, photo verification, and end-to-end encryption.
- A legal name or a company number. Neither appears in the client or in the posts quoted here.
- That the server has no moderation model hidden behind the websocket. The client never calls one. The server code is not public. The promises above were made in public, and the client a visitor can read does not contain them.
- That a human reviews reports "immediately." The client says that. The deployment does not say who, if anyone, staffs the queue.
- An operator name, a privacy policy, or a working guidelines page. None of those were on the deployment on 3 October 2026.
